Liver cancer ranks among the top 10 causes of cancer related deaths worldwide with high prevalence of tumor recurrence and metastasis after initial treatment. The study conducted by University of Michigan aims to evaluate the effect of histotripsy, a noninvasive sound technology, on tumor progression in rats. The result shows that the treatment can break down liver tumors in rats, kills cancer cells and spurs the immune system to prevent further spread – an advance that could lead to improved cancer outcomes in humans.
