An all-time favorite book of mine is called Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience. Based on years of research Psychologist and best-selling author Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi explains how people can achieve a state of mind that involves high productivity, maximum performance, but at the same time a feeling of ease and satisfaction, or what he calls “Flow”. We can witness flow in seeing a master artist, world-class athlete, or talented musician in a blissful almost trance-like state as they perform the activity they love most with near perfection. But the state of flow is not reserved for elite athletes or savants. Each of us is capable of finding our flow, doing what we love with optimal performance and ebullient emotion. Everyone can find their flow, it is a matter of finding what you love to do and pursing it with passion. This is aspirational, but also attainable, and this book is a practical roadmap to finding your flow. It turns out that we are the architects who build our own happiness, not lucky lottery winners who passively receive it. But it takes determination and planning to get to a state of flow. Once we are aware of this potential, we can build it into our daily practice in ways small and large. This book changed my outlook and my life, and I recommend it highly.
