Renowned scholar Louis W. Fry in 2002 launched a human-centered vision of leadership that even an atheist can appreciate. Fry explains how the fulfillment that people universally seek may be found at work, but only if the leadership is right. Fry distinguishes spirituality as distinct from religion, and posits two key values: Calling, and Membership. Organizations provide a sense of “calling” to employees by reinforcing the idea that their life has meaning and their work makes a difference. A feeling of membership arises when an organization’s leaders and followers “have genuine care, concern, and appreciation for both self and others.”
